The Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research (BIMR) - named in honour of McMaster Professor and 1994 Nobel laureate Bertram Brockhouse - supports interdisciplinary materials-based research. The Institute was one of the first materials research centers in North America and is the largest such institute in Canada. Next year it will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Institute has a membership of over 120 including 17 Canada Research Chairs. These researchers within the institute are recognized as leaders in electron microscopy, crystal growth, polymer synthesis, processing and characterization, X-ray characterization, and materials discovery and refinement. In March 2004, the Brockhouse Institute was selected to host the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy: a CFI funded initiative. In the spring of 2007, the most advanced analytical microscopes in the world will be available to Canadian researchers through CCEM and the Brockhouse Institute. This proposal will ensure complete access to all of the capabilities of the Brockhouse Institute for researchers from academia, government and industry. It will encourage highly innovative, interdisciplinary research and stimulate innovation. Finally, it will enable a new generation of Canadian researchers to be trained at the most advanced level.The vision behind the Brockhouse Institute is that the very best research is always driven by the ideas and imagination of the researchers. The objective of this Institute is to develop versatile tools at the highest level and provide the infrastructure, access and expertise that researchers require to take full advantage of them.
