The overall objective of this research is to rigorously merge heterogeneous height data for providing vertical georeferencing and associated height accuracy values in real-time. Thus far, the research and consequently the implementations have been limited to static or post-processing modes. The applications of a real-time vertical georeferencing system that incorporates temporal variations and provides accuracy values are multi-disciplinary and far-reaching. The real-time component is particularly useful for numerous emerging applications such as environmental monitoring, remote sensing, lidar, and digital elevation modelling. Combined with the inclusion of numerical models and observations of processes that change surface elevations and gravity, this will result in a novel and comprehensive means for establishing vertical control for applications in geomatics engineering, surveying, forestry and environmental science, civil engineering and mining, hydrology, and sea level change. The intent of this proposal is to bring this research to the next level by incorporating newly available satellite-based height information with existing data and by accounting for temporal variations in these height data and vertical datums. This is a necessary step that addresses the 'gap' in current height activities and is important for the advanced implementation of a modern vertical control system for multi-scale practical applications. The computation and provision of heights and their accuracies to all users is a research and industry 'first' and will introduce the reliability and quality components to vertical georeferencing that have been difficult to achieve to date.
