Cognitive Processes and Linguistic Factors in Written Language Acquisition A major challenge facing beginning readers and writers is to master the complexities of spelling structure (i.e., the constraints describing how letters are sequenced in the written language), and to integrate this with what they know about spoken language. Although the majority of children accomplish this feat through self-learning, a number of children continue to struggle with the complexities of written language. This work will provide a systematic analysis of the learning processes underlying written language acquisition. It is expected that this work will provide valuable knowledge for both scientific and educational communities in Canada.
