We will focus on fundamental formulation and computational issues for accurate and consistent finite element simulation of transient elastic structures undergoing large deformations and displacements (geometrical and material nonlinearities) induced by the flow of incompressible fluids. We will cover the non trivial case of incompressible solids. This is a challenging, relevant and innovative program since it will allow for simulating the behaviour of biological fluid-structures interactions like pulsatile flow in compliant arteries constrained by endovascular prostheses. We will also apply the methodology to the design caracterisation and optimisation of underwater offshore structures (pipes, risers and anchor lines to name a few). The basis of this new formulation has been verified for steady state compressible and incompressible structures and incompressible fluids simulations. The impact of this work is two-fold. First it provides generic knowledge advances on the modeling of fluid-structure interactions. Secondly it provides new tools to address central questions that affect competitiveness of Canadian industry and the well being of the Canadian population.
