Cosmology and galaxy formation are Carlberg's primary research interests. He co-lead the CNOC survey and the Las Campanas Infrared Survey and helped originate the Gemini Deep Deep Survey, all of which significantly advanced the knowledge of cosmology and galaxy evolution. His major current research effort is the supernova cosmology component of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey, SNLS. SNLS is a rolling search imaging survey which has captured the attention of many of the world's largest telescopes for follow-up spectroscopic data. The collaboration has submitted a paper based on the first 71 supernovae (of 700 anticipated) already giving a tight new constraint on the properties of the Dark Energy that drives the acceleration of the universe. The survey is designed to control possible systematic effects which could distort the cosmological measurement and will lead to insight into the physics of supernovae. Carlberg is also the Project Director of the Large Optical Telescope Project, which is one of four equal partners in the Thirty Meter Telescope Project.
