Physics of transition metal oxides and correlated electronic systems

The goal of this research program is to understand, at a fundamental level, the properties of quantum phenomena in novel transition metal oxides, and various theoretical-physics models that attempt to describe these materials. Our research efforts will delve into subjects such as exotic superconductivity and quantum magnetism - these macroscopic quantum phenomena arise from quantum mechanical properties of interacting electrons in both ordered and disordered solids. In particular, these behaviours cannot be described within conventional theories of metals - cornerstones and in fact tenets of condensed matter theory in the last century, notably Fermi liquid theory and the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity, are unsuccessful when applied to these new materials. As part of a large national and international effort to understand these materials, we focus on developing reliable theoretical predictions for models that are believed to contain the key ingredients in describing these materials, as well as on maintaing close contact with the myriad of exciting new experimental observations that has provided the considerable inertia that this field now enjoys.
