Materials for application in Optical Engineering are still representing the main bottleneck stopping the development of technology. Efforts have to be made to develop new materials, study their fabrication and to characterize them according to the foreseen technology. My research group is studying different types of materials such as photopolymers, dye-dopes polymers, chalcogenides and photonic band gap crystals. Polymers materials are offering very elegant and cheap solutions to problems faced by the Optical Engineering Industries. Those materials can be used to make photonic components, biophotonics and agrophotonics sensors, etc. Chalcogenide films are still being considered as promising materials for numerous optical applications. We have developed expertises in Sol-gel fabrication and MetalOrganic Deposition of materials which can be bringing to an aligned crystalline structure. Photonic Band Gap made by use of nanosphere of polymers has been made but techniques and quality of those crystals need to be studied. The objective of the proposed research program is the development of different materials that will address the needs of specific applications in Optical Engineering, Agro and Biophotonics, in Communications. More specifically, we will start a new program using grafted dye on a polycarbonate to realize a polymer that might be formed using plastic injection techniques. This material will provide an erasable recording media suitable for holographic data storage. This photochromic system will represent an answer to problems described by HDS industry.
