Chemistry of small ring compounds and destabilized carbocations

A new method for preparing a class of medicinal agents (nucleosides) for the use in cancer and viral therapy has been developed in our laboratory. This method has been issued a North American patent. The proposal is to adapt this method to a rapid synthesis approach using polymer supports in order to streamline the synthesis of a large number of compounds (chemical libraries) with slightly modified structures in order to identify potential drug candidates for further development. Chemical modification of these commercial polymers will improve the more wider applications in the area of drug delivery and cosmetics. Another aspect of our research involves the understanding of the chemical processes induced by light interaction. Such research is relevant in the context of photostability of materials.
