A research team at l'Université Laval will undertake, in close collaboration with industrial partner and sponsor InterDigital Canada Inc., a research program to create innovative and high performance signal processing algorithms and their efficient hardware implementations to support advanced, broadband wireless transceivers. These algorithms include techniques to separate multiple incoming data streams in MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) systems with reduced complexity, and with a maximum degree of flexibility to adapt to changing channel and interference conditions. One planned avenue is the investigation of virtual MIMO reception, where the throughput and performance of MIMO is achieved with a single antenna, thus reducing significantly fabrication cost, power consumption and physical device size. The design of advanced LDPC codecs, building upon recent research results at Laval, is also planned. InterDigital is a world leader in advanced communications algorithms and techniques with an impressive patent portfolio which it licenses to essentially all major telecom players. InterDigital Canada plans to spend more than 7M$ in Canada in R&D next year. Having a dedicated research staff of more than 40 people at its Montreal location, InterDigital is a forward-looking corporation, willing to invest in long-term research projects which are fundamental in nature, and capable of turning these into commercial successes. The proposed research program, which will be deployed within the contexts of the 802.11n and 3G LTE standards-in-progress, is ideally aligned with InterDigital's roadmap. It is expected that the technologies developed could influence upcoming standards, through InterDigital's active involvement in various standards bodies and workgroups.
