A total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer is requested to support a research program in drinking water treatment. The analyzer will replace a unit that is failing and can no longer be repaired.Organic matter is ubiquitous in natural waters, and has a major influence on most water treatment processes. For example, the advanced oxidation technologies being studied as part of the research program to be supported by the TOC analyzer are impaired by organic matter, which scavenges hydroxyl radicals that are otherwise used to destroy micropollutants. Organic matter also reacts with chlorine to form potentially toxic byproducts, which can possibly be controlled through some of the techniques being explored in the research. The use of membranes to treat water may be compromised by organic matter which causes the membranes to foul more quickly; or conversely, organic matter can combine with certain dissolved micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals to be removed more effectively by membranes. These are some of the issues being investigated by the applicants, and all require the ability to measure the total amount of organic material present in the water.The outcomes from this work will benefit many sectors of the Canadian drinking water industry, such as manufacturers of membrane or advanced oxidation technologies, municipal practitioners of the technology, and government regulators who must assess the effectiveness of existing treatment methods when introducing new regulations.
