Collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy is a well-established method for measuring hyperfine structures and isotopic shifts with high sensitivity and resolution. From the optical spectra information on nuclear ground state properties, such as spins moments and changes in mean square charge radii can be derived. The information is especially valuable when available for nuclei far from stability and is commonly used for testing and improving nuclear models and mass formulas.We have initiated a collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy experiment at ISAC (TRIUMF), where we have measured the nuclear moments of the short lived isotope 131La using continuous ion beams excited by a laser. However neighbouring isotopes are produced at ISAC with lower yields and the sensitivity of our apparatus has to be increased for extending our measurements. This will be possible by using bunched ion beams which will become available from a bunching device built for mass measurements with the TITAN mass spectrometer at ISAC. The use of bunched beams allows an increase of the signal to noise ratio in the observed spectra by using gating or coincidence techniques.This application asks for funds for components which will help us to establish a collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy section at our buncher device operated off-line at McGill. This set-up will be used for off-line tests of excitation and detection schemes, which will then be applied on-line at ISAC.
