英文摘要
In 1999, Dr. Paul Treitz was awarded a Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) grant to purchase a ground-based spectroradiometer. This spectroradiometer records spectral reflectance across the visible, near-infrared and shortwave infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Vegetation spectral reflectance is closely related to the physiology of vegetation (i.e., chlorophyll concentration, stress, water content, etc.). This instrument allows us to characterize the reflectance properties of different vegetation communities for comparison to satellite reflectance. In this manner we can determine the spectral information from satellite sensors which is optimal for identifying different vegetation communities and their condition. As the Canadian Arctic continues to warm, it is critical that we be able to monitor vegetation response.     The Analytical Spectral Devices Spectroradiometer purchased through CFI is now eight years old and out-dated in terms of its design, electronics and computer integration. Although a number of modifications have been made to keep the system operating effectively over the last few years, it is getting more difficult to make these modifications without impacting the integrity of the spectral measurements. More importantly, this unit is not fitted for operations in cold environments. This application is for funds to have this unit upgraded so that we can use it to collect ground-based spectra in arctic environments. This is necessary to more effectively understand arctic plant community reflectance for mapping and monitoring changes in these ecosystems.     Faculty and students in my research program will use this instrument to address research questions related to arctic plant community classification and reflectance feature extraction through collection of integrated vegetation community spectra at sites in the Canadian Arctic. Access to this type of sophisticated instrumentation provides valuable experience and expertise to students pursuing careers in remote sensing and earth system science.
