英文摘要
In the soil environment, reactions are seldom in true equilibrium. Instead, changes in the chemical makeup of the soil solution are constantly affecting the solubility of minerals, the surface charge of solid phases, and sorption and release of trace metals. For these reasons, kinetics (time dependence of reaction) is an important variable in studying the reactivity of soils. When kinetics data are combined with molecular-scale studies ofthe mechanisms of adsorption, a clear picture of contaminant reactivity can be obtained. However, there are very few techniques capable of studying the mechanisms of reactions at the mineral/water interface in real time. The proposed equipment will allow us to monitor many important chemical reactions on hydrated mineral surfaces in real time using Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy.
