The deliverable is a numerical model of the interplay between river flow rates, levels and ice breakup processes. The objectives are to (1) provide flow regulators and hydro-electric organisations a model that would enable them to mange flow releases and increase the generation of safe electricity without risking to disrupt equilibrium ice conditions on the river; (2) to assess increased flood risks due to winter conditions and thereby optimize flood evacuation plans in the event of a dam break during winter conditions. Research activities include data gathering from the field, physical process identification; algorithm definition; simulation sensitivity analysis; hydrodynamic and ice cover model integration; and analytical and test case application and model assessment. Implementation includes working with a hydro-electric partner for some test cases to ensure tool integration within the organisation.
