The equipment requested here is to build a Time-Differential PerturbedAngular Correlation (TDPAC) spectrometer. This instrument will have atime resolution of better than 1ns (1/1,000,000,000 seconds) and willbe used to study magnetic materials at the atomic scale.By understanding how the individual atoms in a material interact toyield the large-scale magnetic properties that are exploited in bulkmaterials (permanent magnets in motors, recording media in disc drives)we aim to develop new materials with improved performance.Magnetic materials are central to many technologies, the most obviousbeing the recording industry. Research into fundamental issues in magnetismhas led to countless advances in hard magnets for motors, thin-film magnetsfor computer hard discs and very soft magnets for read/write heads indisc drives. The projects that will be undertaken with the equipment requested hereaddress fundamental issues of magnetic ordering: both the nature of theorder and the time variations of that ordering will be investigated.
