Atmospheric Studies from Satellite and ground based instrumentation

The objectives of the proposed research program are to provide new information on the composition and temperature in the stratosphere and throughout the mesosphere using data from satellite and ground based instruments. This research will take advantage of the unparalleled quality of the data-set that is available from the OSIRIS instrument on the Odin satellite, although data from other satellites such as ACE/SciSat, Envisat, Aura and TOMS will also be used. The Canadian OSIRIS instrument on Odin provides high signal-to-noise ratio measurements over the entire dynamic range associated with observations of the atmospheric limb. The OSIRIS observations will be analyzed using the tomographic algorithms developed by the applicant. This analysis procedure yields both the vertical and horizontal structure of the measured quantities, and the derived constituent concentrations. The horizontal and vertical resolutions possible with OSIRIS are 75 km and 1 km respectively.We will extend our previous research to determine details of the climatology of stratospheric and mesospheric ozone and the oxygen airglow. This work has provided new information on the ozone profile and distribution in the region of the Antarctic Ozone Hole, and in the NH. The ozone concentrations derived from OSIRIS will be compared with those with those from the sub-millimetre radiometer on Odin. The infrared imager observations will be combined with to determine the H-atom concentration profile. It is expected that this work will provide new information on the transport of hydrogen through the mesosphere and into the thermosphere and its subsequent escape from the planet.We will use the measured height profiles to determine the atmospheric temperature profile. The measurements will also be used to give new information on atmospheric aerosols. We also intend to explore PMC's and polar stratospheric clouds.Finally a major objective is to enhance the training of highly qualified personnel.
