Atmospheric Studies from Satellite and ground based instrumentation

The objectives of the proposed research program are to provide new information on the composition and temperature in the stratosphere and throughout the mesosphere using data from satellite and ground based instruments. This research will take advantage of the unparalleled quality of the data-set that is available from the OSIRIS instrument on the Odin satellite, although data from other satellites such as ACE/SciSat, Envisat, Aura and TOMS will also be used. The Canadian OSIRIS instrument on Odin provides high signal-to-noise ratio measurements over the entire dynamic range associated with observations of the atmospheric limb. The OSIRIS observations will be analyzed using the tomographic algorithms developed by the applicant. This analysis procedure yields both the vertical and horizontal structure of the measured quantities, and the derived constituent concentrations. The horizontal and vertical resolutions possible with OSIRIS are 75 km and 1 km respectively.
