The overall objective of this research program is to propose creative solutions in two aspects in the area of manufacturing, that are very pertinent to the aeronautical industry.PROJECT A : Intelligent CAPP Methodology for Machining Complex Prismatic ComponentsThe objective here is to develop an intelligent Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) methodology based on application of Soft Computing techniques for automating the machining operations selection and different setup planning tasks, and multi objective optimization of the generated setup plan for machining complex prismatic components. Use of techniques such as neural networks, fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms will be investigated. In addition, the methodology and software system will be developed to automatically extract the data necessary for process planning from the CATIA CAD database.PROJECT B: Determining Residual Stresses in Thin Sheets Welded by Friction Stir Welding to Minimize Warping and DeformationWe propose to analytically investigate, using various computer-based methods, the residual stresses in thin sheets, usually of Aluminium, and then to experimentally verify these results. Our aim is to better understand how certain process parameters (such as the hold-down force and the tool movement) can be adjusted to reduce sheet warpage.
