Spectrophotometric/fluorometric plate reader for metabolic assays

This application is for a spectrophotometric/fluorometric plate reader to be used for muscle and blood metabolite assays. The applicants for this RTI grant are Drs. David J. Dyck (principal applicant) and Lawrence L. Spriet (co-applicant). Both Drs. Dyck and Spriet examine the regulation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in mammalian skeletal muscle, and each currently hold NSERC Discovery grants.  In addition, Dr. Dyck holds a CIHR grant. The main objective of Dr. Dyck's research program is to understand the basic regulation of fatty acid (FA) metabolism in skeletal muscle. Specifically, these objectives include the role of i) Ca2+, energy charge and AMP-activated protein kinase; ii) hormones including leptin, adiponectin, resistin, IL-6, TNFa; and iii) altered FA metabolism in obesity/diabetes. Dr. Spriet examines the regulaton of fat and carbohydrate metabolism in human skeletal muscle, with emphasis on both exercise and disease (obesity) situations. Collectively, projects from these investigators require the extensive analyses of muscle and blood metabolites related to carbohydrate and lipid metabolism - these are core measurements in all of our studies.
