French press for the lysis of bacteria

This application seeks support for the purchase of a French press for the lysis of bacteria in the McMaster University Department of Biology. This instrument is used to break up the rigid bacterial cells, which is an essential step for the purification of many types of different biomolecules. The instrument will be heavily used for the NSERC-funded research programs of the applicants Drs. Baron, Cameron, Elliot, Finan and Schellhorn and other faculty members at McMaster will use it occasionally. The principal application will be the purification of proteins from environmental, human- and plant associated bacteria. These proteins will then be further studied and the results of this work will lead to a better understanding of the contributions of these bacteria to environmental process, to human and plant health. In addition to its use in research, the instrument will be used for the training of graduate and of undergraduate students to advance their practical knowledge of protein purification technology and improve their preparation for scientific research or for employment in the biotechnology sector.
