This project concerns the optical properties of ferromagnets, materials widely used in technology from transformer cores and electric motors to computer data storage.  The project will focus on two types of ferromagnets: dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMS), which are of interest due to their potential use in "spintronic" devices, and disordered itinerant ferromagnets which may one day be of practical use in transformer cores.  The optical data collected in the course of the project will contribute to understanding ferromagnetism and ferromagnetic devices.
