This proposal outlines the need for a spectrometer capable of both infrared (IR) and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy.  Such an instrument enables the study of a wide array of synthetic and natural molecules and typically supports the progress of researchers in a broad range of fields.  The instrument requested is part of the standard suite of characterization tools that is required for structural identification of practically any molecule.  Most research groups that prepare and study chemical compounds require the use of IR spectroscopy to determine key structural features within chemicals. In addition to routine molecular characterization, IR and NIR spectroscopy can provide important information about highly specialized molecules that reveal structural aspects through specific bond vibrations that can be detected only with the use of these techniques.  The requested instrument will therefore significantly impact ongoing research on the preparation and investigation of functionalized carbon nanotubes, highly conjugated porphyrin polymers and oligomers, non-linear optical materials, antimicrobial natural products, enzyme inhibitors, optical waveguides for the telecommunications industry, new types of organometallic catalysts for organic transformations, as well as numerous other research programs that require molecular characterization.  Practically every researcher within the McMaster Chemistry Department will be positively impacted by the requested instrument.
