This research program investigates novel proton conducting inorganic-organic hybrid materials. Such materials have potential applications in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and biosensors. This research involves the investigation of new polymer electrolytes and electrode structures based upon these materials. Studies will focus upon the preparation and complete physical and electrochemical characterization of these materials. Of particular interest is the relation between polymer electrolyte structure and its proton conductivity, thermal stability, and water retention as a function temperature. The materials will also be used in the fabrication of ceramic carbon electrodes, which are anticipated to be highly active and robust electrodes fuel cell and biosensory systems.
