Multiscale rheological modeling of complex fluids

A part of the project is a fundamental research in the emergence of new phenomena in the passage from microscopic to mesoscopic and macroscopic viewpoints of macroscopic systems. One of its main objectives is to identify a general framework for the governing equations guaranteeing that their solutions agree with results of certain fundamental experimental observations. The framework is then applied in the second part to rheological and thermodynamic modeling of complex fluids. The objective is to establish a relation between molecular and microstructural properties on the one side and mesoscopic properties (like thermodynamic, rheological, and mechanical properties) on the other side. Specific complex fluids are chosen according to the importance in technology and according to our access to results of a complementary, experimentally oriented, research. We propose to continue to investigate: (i) immiscible blends of polymeric fluids (including the passage from miscibility to immiscibility under flow), (ii) polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites, (iii) semidilute colloidal suspensions in Newtonian and polymeric fluids, (iv) dilute polymeric solutions subjected to turbulent flows (the problem of drag reduction), and  (v) glasses.
