The overall objective of the proposed research is to develop new methods for imaging electrical fields and properties of tissues. The intent is to image electric current density and conductivity. These goals are similar to those of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT). The major methodological difference is that we base our conductivity measurements on internal magnetic field measurements made with a Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI). The proposed work is a continuation of a program begun in 1987, which has lead to the development of Current Density (CD) Imaging (CDI). CDI uses a MRI to measure the magnetic vector field, B, produced by volume currents inside the region where the current is flowing. The CD vector, J, is computed using Maxwell's equation, J=curl(B)/m0.
