Memory - production and evaluation

Most broadly, the research programme is an attempt to produce an integrated framework for understanding the role of memory and performance in both remembering and nonremembering (e.g., conceptual and perceptual) activities. In this framework, all performance involves the production of some behaviour or mental content, accompanied by an evaluation of that production. The role of memory is to store prior experiences of interacting with stimuli and to control the production of performance toward future stimuli; these interactions are controlled by the transfer-appropriate processing principle. At the same time, the quality of the interaction (its fluency, completeness, integrality) is evaluated; a discrepancy between actual and expectable quality is attributed to some source (pleasantness or familiarity of the stimulus; error in processing the stimulus), and gives rise to a feeling state, which may itself may become the basis of further performance. Much of my prior work has been aimed at demonstrating the first part of this account, that performance in both remembering and nonremembering tasks is controlled by t.a.p. This project is intended to explore the fluency-attribution principle, first by understanding the feeling of familiarity more deeply, second by investigating its role in cognate areas such as FOK (the feeling-of-knowing) and the mere exposure effect, and thirdly by demonstrating that feelings of wellstructuredness, resulting from an attribution about fluent processing, are equally the basis of important judgements in nonremembering activities such as perception and classification
