The Pacific Northwest Consortium Synchrotron Radiation Facility (PNCSRF) provides scientists from across Canada access to the synchrotron radiation beamlines, the instrumentation and all the techniques that the Pacific Northwest Consortium Collaborative Access Team (PNC-CAT) has developed and will continue to develop as the reorganized PNC/XOR (x-ray operations and research) at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, Illinois, U.S.A. It permits the study of a broad range of problems in condensed matter physics, surface science, chemistry, materials science, environmental science, earth and geosciences. X-ray techniques are used to extract information on the structure of ordered and disordered systems from single crystals to liquids.  Coordination, speciation or distribution can be obtained in complex systems. Time resolved studies on the microsecond to sub-nanosecond time scale are possible. The PNC/XOR has two beamlines operational: an insertion device (ID, multi-pole undulator) beam line and a bending magnet (BM) beamline. Microbeams and spectroscopic applications are emphasized, but scattering techniques are available. Double crystal monochromators can be operated in a scanning mode over the energy range  2.4 keV to 75 keV. Spectroscopic techniques include XAFS (XANES and EXAFS), surface XAFS, DAFS (diffraction anomalous fine structure), and XSW (x-ray standing wave). Scanning micro-imaging, micro-XAFS and micro- diffraction can be done to 1 micron spatial resolution. X-ray scattering experiments are possible with one, two, four, and eight circle diffractometers.  X-ray inelastic scattering techniques include resonant and non-resonant Raman scattering. Coherent Bragg Rod Analysis (COBRA) of the atomic structure of epitaxial films is possible. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of magnetic properties are possible.  Two molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) systems are available for in situ characterization with XAFS and surface x-ray diffraction.  Laser-pump x-ray-probe experiments are possible with a high repetition rate laser system emitting pulses of 250 fs duration synchronized to a single 100 ps bunch of x-ray photons.
