This research proposal deals with the application of advanced mathematical techniques for calculation of the current currying capability of electric power cables. The following are the areas to be addressed: 1. Optimal ampacities for groups of unequally loaded, dissimilar cables. 2. Development of rating methods for cables laid in a "utility sidewalk" installation. This is a new trenchless technology that is being developed and there are no ampacity calculation methods available. 3. Development of installation guides for circuits with multiple cables per phase. Optimization and artificial intelligence methods will be applied. 4. Algorithms for transient rating calculations with arbitrary starting temperatures. All existing methods are based on either ambient or steady-state starting temperatures. In practice, emergency calculations are required for arbitrary starting temperatures reflecting in-situ measurements. 5. Advanced numerical studies to determine the external thermal resistance of touching cables with heavy sheath circulating currents.
