Enhancement of power system security

In today's restructured electric power industry the security of operation is becoming a very important concern. The blackouts in the East of North America and some other parts of world have recently brought the topic of power system security to a prominent place. The proposed research program is focused on the assessment and enhancement of power system security. This research program will develop new techniques and improve existing techniques to determine whether the power system is operating close to the security limit. The proximity to security limit will be quantified and incorporated into decision making tools used in power system operation. In the absence of such tools power systems could either operate too conservatively resulting in a loss of revenue or it could operate at a very high risk. The proposed research program will also develop novel control methods to utilize modern power electronics based devices to enhance power system security.  The developed tools and techniques will be combined into one platform, so that it will give useful insights to the planners, operators, market designers, and researchers. This research program will train highly qualified personnel in the subject area of power system operation, with a particular emphasis on the security of power systems. Currently there is a shortage of experts in this area.
