The Zebra battery operates on the basis of a redox reaction between liquid sodium and solid nickel chloride. Good contact between reactants is maintained as follows: on the anode side, liquid sodium is in contact with B"-alumina and on the cathode side, nickel chloride is in contact with molten NaAlC14, where both 6"-alumina and NaAlCW are sodium ion conductors. The battery operates at 300°C with a typical output of 600 VDC and an external temperature close to ambient.
