Solid oxide fuel cell interconnects are typically chromium alloys that function well under high temperature operation but have one major disadvantage, i.e., the formation of volatile chromium oxide species that are deleterious to fuel cell operation, an effect commonly known as chromium poisoning. To date, Gates Canada has treated the problem by applying a barrier layer of conductive ceramic by plasma spray. The LaMnO3 ceramic is a relatively high cost material, and the plasma spray process and required equipment also have high associated costs.
