During the extraction and refining of nickel, copper and cobalt from ores in the Sudbury area, one step involves blowing of air into molten sulfides at about 1200 oC. This step which is called converting, oxidizes and removes iron sulfides, thereby increasing the concentration of the valuable metal sulfides. However, unfortunately also some of the valuable metal sulfides(nickel, copper and cobalt sulfides) get oxidized and reports into the slag phase which consists of various metal oxides.
