To decrease SO2 emissions from Vale-Incos smelter in Thompson and from Xstratas nickel smelter in Falconbridge, one option is to carry out a very high degree of oxidation in the fluid bed roasters, effectively removing most of the sulphur in the concentrate. The SO2 emitted from the roasters can readily be converted into sulphuric acid and not be let into the atmosphere. This will significantly lower the SO2 emissions from the subsequent furnace smelting and converting steps, from which it is much more difficult and costly to collect and convert the SO2 into acid.
