We are applying for funds to establish the Quttinirpaaq/Lake Hazen Polar Field Laboratory along the shores of Lake Hazen in Quttinirpaaq National Park on northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. Human-induced climate change is altering Canadian polar ecosystems at unprecedented rates. By the end of the century, temperatures in the Canadian High Arctic are predicted to increase 2.8-7.8 C relative to 1980-1999. As a result, now is the time to ensure ongoing, new and extensive research programs in the High Arctic are poised to quantify the timing and full extent of change in polar ecosystem function and services. National Parks provide extraordinary areas to conduct this type of research because Parks Canada's mandate is to ensure the ecological integrity of their protected ecoregions, theoretically in perpetuity. Quttinirpaaq National Park is a jewel in the north because of its magnificent diversity of landscapes, which has resulted in both a rich diversity of research programs on Arctic ecology in the past, and a phenomenal location for new research programs to be established now and well into the future. For a relatively small investment from NSERC, the proposed 16'x 32' insulated Weatherhaven field laboratory will provide a clean, safe and warm shelter in which to conduct high-quality research programs, and train university-based HQP (e.g., graduate students) and Northern Community members on High Arctic ecology for decades into the future. Multidisciplinary studies proposed here include those quantifying: 1) nutrient and contaminant deposition and cycling, 2) historical change in climate determined by "paleo-limnological" methods, 3) contemporary net primary production and microbial ecology in High Arctic lakes, 4) net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide and methane from aquatic, wetland and tundra surfaces, 5) the impact of climate change on plant species in Arctic tundra vegetation, 6) High Arctic bryophyte (e.g., mosses and liverworts) ecology, 7) Arctic charr genetic diversity and food web dynamics, and 8) density dependent habitat use by lemmings, to name a few.
