In my environmental microbiology laboratory, we investigate bacteria that can break down toxic compounds, primarily chlorinated aromatics and related pesticides. In particular we are looking at bacteria that have evolved in uncontaminated soils, and asking questions about the natural factors that have led to the development of useful biodegradation genes. This research involves cultivation of bacteria from soils and plant root zones, and also involves the cloning, sequencing and analysis of the genes and their arrangements. We hope to learn more about how these genes evolve, how they are maintained and how they can be better regulated in bioremediation applications.
