Biocompatible polymers have been widely used to make various advanced medications such as once daily blood-pressure-controlling pills that provide more effective treatment with lower side effects than conventional medications. The properties of polymers such as molecular weight and dissolving rate determine when and how fast the medicine will take effect thus affecting the therapeutic benefit of such medications. Unlike small molecules, polymers prepared in one reaction can have different molecular weights, and some polymers degrade during application thus controlling the release rate of therapeutic agents from the medications.
