Rock failures in mining, hydrofracturing, and earthquakes are highly transient processes where loads are applied in a fraction of a second, or even microseconds. Traditional approach to studying the response of rock and rock-like materials involves measurement of their response under static loading conditions, and extrapolation of these results to dynamic loads. This is highly unsatisfactory as there is no one-to-one correlation between static and dynamic measurements. The laboratory static measurements of rock fracture toughness are orders of magnitude lower than those determined from field data. It is thus paramount to develop improved methods for dynamic measurement of rock fractures in a environment similar to that of underground.
