There is a worldwide trend for the increase of the operation depth in rock engineering projects. The high in-situ stress associated with the depth poses grand challenges to rock engineers. As major economic players in the Canadian economy, mining and petroleum industries are thus in great need to understand the effect of high in-situ stress on the mechanical properties of rocks. To specifically address the effect of high in-situ stress on the dynamic responses of rocks, systematic experimental research is planned in this proposal. High in-situ stresses are simulated using a recently developed innovative confining cell and dynamic loads are exerted by a state of the art split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system. Using innovative testing methods developed by the applicant, systematic investigations on the dynamic rock properties of rocks under various confinements simulating high in-situ stresses will be carried out. Complete set of dynamic properties of rocks, including compression, tension, shear, bending, and fracture properties will be studied under triaxial confinement, hydrostatic confinement and pre-tension for the first time. The outcome of the research will significantly benefit the economy of Canada relevant to natural resources. In this proposal, highly qualified personnel of different levels will be trained and will be valuable contributors to the Canadian job market. The cutting-edge research proposed will also position Canada as the leading nation of rock dynamics in underground rock engineering problems.
