Climate changes are affecting the Canadian Arctic and evidence indicates the impact that industrial activities are having on the climate system. Research is needed to document past climate variability and place current changes in context of the past. The focus of this research program is to document climate variability in the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic during the past 10000 years. This is done by the analysis of fossils extracted from lake sediments. By studying the fossil record we can understand how Arctic ecosystems have responded to past climate variability. In this way, we can compare current changes to those observed in the past and determine how unusual the current changes are.
