Helium Pynometer for measuring true density of powdered porous materials

This application is for a helium pycnometer to measure the true density of powder samples. The Dahn lab comprises about 30 researchers, most of whom are making powdered samples by a variety of methods. Three of the methods, high energy ball milling, mechanical attriting and roller milling are examples of mechanochemical synthesis, where amorphous or nanostructured alloys or compounds are produced at room temperature by repeated intense mechanical contacts. Amorphous or nanostructured materials are also produced by rapid solidification and co-sputttering. The density of powdered amorphous or nanostructured materials can only be measured conveniently using a He pycnometer. The density of amorphous and nanostructured materials gives important insights into their atomic packing. In addition, the density is pratically important because it is critical to be able to pack as much battery electrode material as possible into battery cans in order to maximize volumetric energy density.
