A state-of-the-art gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer with superior sensitivity, wide mass range, and exceptional versatility will be the central and indispensable tool of research activities in environmental organic chemistry at the University of Toronto Scarborough. The new instrument will be used to detect and quantify trace amounts of organic contaminants in numerous environmental samples (including air, soil, water, vegetation) from remote regions in Canada and around the globe. It will also serve in identifying and establishing the presence and distribution of previously undetected organic contaminants in the Canadian environment. The research conducted with the help of this instrument will thus provide new insight into the global transport and accumulation behavior of organic chemicals, as well as aid in the assessment of the impact that currently unknown contaminants have on humans and their environment.
