Computationally intensive methods are crucial to modern statistical research and applications. Faculty and graduate students in Statistics and Biostatistics at the University of Toronto currently use a computer system purchased using previous NSERC grants. Our graduate student enrollment has recently increased, putting increased demands on this system. The nature of recent scientific advances, particularly in biology, also places increasing emphasis on large data sets and intensive computations.
