Foundations of Network Science: Models, techniques and algorithms

The recent years has brought about the convergence between networking and distributed computation and search. This has been termed Network Science. The tools and methodologies could be to support networking functions such as control, routing, and resource allocation or using the distributed resources to perform computations on data that is available from geographically distributed resources. Moreover access and infrastructure is increasingly wireless. While our understanding of these issues is well advanced for wired networks, the situation is quite different in wireless networks in spite of the tremendous strides in providing bandwidth. The multi-hop wireless paradigm brings a host of fundamental issues: the notion of network capacity limits in the presence of interference from other users and noisy channels, mobility of users, and the ability to perform distributed computations. New applications such as social networking also bring the issue of distributed information storage and propagation of information to the forefront that requires new approaches based on opportunistic communication.
