The remains of midges (primarily chironomids) are abundant, and well-preserved in the bottom sediments of lakes, and are now one of the indicator groups most favoured for reconstructing past climatic change. To better document summer palaeotemperatures, a series of sediment cores will be taken from Canadian lakes and analysed for the remains of these insects. The derived temperature reconstructions will allow for detailed assessments of regional changes in climate, and their relationship to other events (e.g., massive meltwater floods, and archeological records).
