Environmental engineers work for society eliminating or minimizing the negative environmental impacts associated with human activities. Composting systems have been identified as a key technology to help recycle organic matter from our waste streams to our soils. Driven by goals set for a sustainable society, the composting industry has seen dramatic growth in the past decade. The amount of organic matter recycled from the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream at large-scale centralized composting facilities has now exceeded 2 million tonnes per year and has grown by 105% since 2000. The total amount of recycled organic matter (ROM) produced in Canada is much higher, as the MSW data do not include pulp and paper industrial wastes, agricultural wastes, or municipal biosolids. For example, the production of livestock manure in Canada, a common composting feedstock, is estimated to be 177.5 million tonnes per year.
