Materials Science is a research field concerns with the manipulation of matter in order to produce new materials with specific or desirable functionality. To achieve the goal of rational design, understanding of the fundamental principles governing the structure and properties is a prerequisite. Pressure is a convenient and powerful thermodynamic parameter for probing details of the electronic structure and will provide insight on how electrons behave in a material. We propose here new experimental and theoretical techniques to help us to further our knowledge on the structural principles of crystal under compression and how this related to the properties. The information obtained will be used in the future to guide us in the fabrication of new materials, for example, with better corrosive resistance property or with superhardness.
