The rapid development of autonomous electronic devices such as laptops, cell phones, and other mobile electronics has generated a great interest in technologies that can transfer relatively high power wirelessly over medium ranges (approximately 0.5m to 10m). Industry hopes that with such technologies, the last remaining wire connecting electronic devices - the power cord - can be finally cut. This could revolutionize the deployment of electronic devices in homes, offices and factories. The objective of this program is to research a novel mid-range wireless power transfer technology conceived by the applicant. The technology, tentatively called magnetic flux-guide scheme, has potentials beyond powering electronic devices wirelessly. The proposed program will investigate three directions and applications: (1) wireless charging of electric vehicles, (2) coreless power transformer and (3) wireless energy extraction from power lines. Three Ph.D. students and two M.Sc. students will be trained through the program.
