Worldwide, mercury used and lost by artisanal and small-scale gold miners (ASGM) represents today 30% (or 1000 tonnes/a) of the all industrial uses of mercury. Most mercury mines are being closed and mercury trading will be banned in Europe in 2011 and US in 2013. This will create difficult moments for the small miners who rely on mercury to recover quickly the easily extractable gold. ASGM all over the world will need to look for alternative processes if they want to keep their sources of income.
