The majority of current robotic manipulation systems are programmed to interact with rigid objects. A wider variety of objects has been considered in virtual reality applications where hard-coding permits to extend the actual physical properties of material, such as its elasticity and surface texture beyond that of rigid bodies. However, an important gap remains between what actual robotic systems can achieve and what virtual models represent when dealing with a large number of everyday life objects which are actually deformable and exhibit very complex behaviors when submitted to external forces.
