The proposed project contributes to two aspects of importance to Canada: a) improving current design rules for steel members and pipelines under complex load combinations and b) advancing methods for predicting their structural response. Vital sectors of the economy expected to largely benefit from the proposed research include the steel construction and the oil and gas pipeline industries. Other applications benefiting from the proposed research include piping systems in nuclear reactors, industrial structures in petro-chemical plants, steel offshore platforms, and offshore pipeline systems. As a producer of steel members, Canada should benefit from an improved understanding of their behaviour. Improved analysis and design methods of steel members and pipelines provides designers a more thorough basis to strike an informed balance between the reliability and economy of these structures.
